Shawan becomes Guangdong's first "Intangible Cultural Heritage Town"

On June 5th, the main event of the 2024 "Cultural and Natural Heritage Day" Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Promotion and Exhibition was held in Shawan Ancient Town, located in Panyu District, Guangzhou City. The unveiling ceremony of the new title "Shawan Intangible Cultural Heritage Town" was also held at the event, making the 800-year-old ancient town the first explicitly-named Intangible Cultural Heritage Town in the province.

A mini parade and a market fair featuring intangible cultural heritages were the other highlights of the events. The parade consisted of a dragon dance and a lion dance, a Piaose performance (floating opera), a Turtle Dance, some fish lanterns, and Hanfu (traditional Chinese clothing) performances. Many young people who donned Hanfu joined the parade.

On the same day, an ICH market fair was set up in Shawan Ancient Town. The ancient town was dotted with Intangible Cultural Heritage elements, allowing visitors to find hidden treasures with a "treasure map" in hand. After collecting the stamps at the specific locations, they were awarded several kinds of Shawan-themed ICH products.
