With a history of about 2,200 years, Jieyang lies in the center of the geographical axis of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Economic Zone on the West Side of the Strait.
Jieyang is famed for places of historic interest that vary widely in style. Jinxian Gate (进贤门), located in the center of the ancient city of Jieyang, was first built in 1621. This architecture, with ancient Chinese features and a great night view, is the symbol of Jieyang ancient city.
Jieyang Confucius Academy is also a must-see attraction, which covers an area of more than 20,000 square meters and has 21 single-block buildings. The complex was the top academic institution in Jieyang in ancient times. It is also the largest Confucius academy at the county-level in China and the best-preserved group of historical buildings in the Lingnan area.
In addition to ancient architecture, Jieyang boasts rich traditional customs, such as the lion dance and lantern parade. During the Spring Festival holidays, Yingge dance, which roughly translates to "Song of Heroes," becomes a big heat. It is a folk dance that merges martial arts and dance and originated in the Chaoshan region of Guangdong 300 years ago. During the Spring Festival, young dancers with facial makeup will give vibrant and mesmerizing Yingge dance performances in some villages in Jieyang.
"I have seen an on-site Yingge dance performance. It brought me great excitement so that I wanted to yell and dance wildly with the dancers," said a neitizen.
Jieyang also has plenty of delicious food options. Stuffed pork intestine with glutinous rice (猪肠胀糯米) is a traditional snack from Jieyang's Puning Ancient Town. The pork intestine is stuffed with glutinous rice, pork, mushroom, shrimp and lotus seed, which makes the snack a unique delicacy. When the night falls, you can come to Zhongshan Road and find another favorite of the locals—marinated goose. The combination of goose meat, goose liver and special seasonings made by the shopkeeper all together gives birth to an unforgettable taste.
Jieyang is known as the "Jade Capital of Asia" and the "Hometown of Chinese Green Plums". The city's many traditional industries such as jade and characteristic agricultural products have been world-renowned.
Jieyang enjoys the largest area and population in the Chaoshan region. In recent years, the city's vitality has been rather enhanced. Based on its coastline of 136.9 km, the city has established convenient land, sea and air transportation, promoting the development of the marine economy here.
In 2017, the country's first offshore wind farm was established in Jieyang. At the end of last year, the Shenquan offshore wind power project phase II in Jieyang started to run, and the world's largest single installed capacity wind turbines at this project have been put into commercial operation. These tremendous efforts contributed to the development of the whole industry chain of offshore wind power.
The project is expected to provide 1.743 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity to the GBA each year, meeting the needs of nearly 900,000 households for a year. Soon, the project will be able to provide energy to more places.
At the same time, Jieyang Dananhai Petrochemical Industrial Park has introduced major coastal projects such as PetroChina Guangdong Petrochemical Refining and Chemical Integration Project, and the PipeChina-Yuedong LNG integration project.
On April 2, Sinopec's Guangdong branch exported its first batch of aviation fuel products. The vessel CHANG LI 16 has carried 9,900 tons of quality aviation fuel from Guangdong to Yangpu Bonded Port Area in Hainan province.
Jieyang, the city on the Tropic of Cancer, is ready to shine.
