The 9th Golden Kapok Screening, scheduled from December 16 to 28 in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, will screen around 20 documentary films, including several award-winning documentaries and 14 first-run films.
Among those are "Between the Rains", winner of the Best Documentary Feature and Best Cinematography at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival; "Against the Tide", winner of the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Vérité Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival 2023 and Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival; and "On the Adamant", winner of the Golden Bear Award at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival.
Chinese creations will also be screened, such as "Above Water" and "Time in the Garden", both of which will have their Asia Premiere during the event. "The Last Spring Troupe", a documentary featuring the stories of a Cantonese Opera troupe in Shenzhen, will have its China premiere as well. This film has been recognized as the Best Debut Feature Film of Theatertreffen and the Best Feature Documentary of the International Rome Film Festival.
In Guangzhou, the documentary films can be enjoyed at the Palace Cinema in both Liede igc and Par Central, and Wing Hon Theatre on Beijing Road. In Shenzhen, moviegoers can head to Broadway Cinema in the MixC and Palace LUXE Cinema.
Meetup events will be held after the screening of selected films, offering an opportunity to engage with the directors. For example, there will be a meeting with Andrew H Brown, director of "Between the Rains" on December 16, with Justine Harbonnier and Maxime Faure, director and film editor of "Caiti Blues", on December 17, and with Suzanne Raes, director of "Close to Vermeer", on December 21.

The Golden Kapok Screening is a signature event of the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, China (GZDOC). Since its establishment in 2014, the screening event has been held in cities and universities throughout the country, greeting hundreds of thousands of documentary film lovers.
