From August 29 to 31, Guangzhou Opera House will stage a unique experiential theater performance titled "Work.txt," exclusively tailored for wage earners. Whether you love your job, are tired of it, eagerly awaiting your annual bonus, or have unfortunately lost your job, you can't afford to miss this contemporary British theatrical work, "Work.txt"!

"Work.txt" is a program co-created by the participants, which is about work, industries, and those inexplicable things.

Stage drama "War and Peace"

The stage drama "War and Peace," directed by the "legendary European theater director" Rimas Tuminas, will make its South China premiere at the Guangzhou Opera House from August 29 to September 1. It is also the closing show of the 2024 Guangzhou Art Season.

The drama "War and Peace" is adapted from the literary masterpiece by Leo Tolstoy. In the nearly five-hour performance, it not only shows the rise and fall of a famous Russian family in the 19th century but also completely depicts the growth of the heroine Natasha from a lovely maiden to a woman with strength and braveness.

Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra 2024/2025 Season Opening Concert

Conducted by Music Director Huang Yi, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra's 2024/2025 Season Opening Concert will present three classic works by the German master composer, Richard Strauss.

Richard Strauss, a late romantic opera master, is renowned for his profound and intricate orchestration skills and unique dramatic effects. This concert will feature "Im Abendrot," one of the songs from his late work "4 Letzte Lieder." The performance will adopt the string version adapted by the composer Zou Ye, which will recreate Strauss's sentiment about the fleeting nature of a happy life and the loss and relief at life's twilight. The Orchestra will also perform Strauss's two early symphonic poems with great stage presence: "Don Juan" and "Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche."

The concert will also feature a contemporary work, "Fidl-Fantazye: A Klezmer Concerto," composed by Noah Bendix-Balgley, First Concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, who will also perform it himself, marking a highlight of the concert.

Opening performance of Guangzhou Jazz Festival 2024

On September 8th, Mike Stern, widely recognized as the "Guitar King" of today's music world, will kick off the exciting opening of the 2024 Guangzhou Jazz Festival, accompanied by versatile saxophonist Huang Ye, jazz drummer Juan Chiavassa, Leni Stern, who has won the Gibson Guitars "Female Jazz Guitarist of the Year" Award for five consecutive years, and bassist Noam Tanzer.

Huang Ye, the young saxophonist in the band, was born in Shenzhen in 1998. He is a multi-talented musician proficient in clarinet, saxophone, and piano, and also a composer. In 2019, when Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performed at the Xinghai Concert Hall, Huang Ye took the stage as the host and interpreter. Since then, Huang Ye has made three appearances at the Guangzhou Jazz Festival, showcasing his original compositions in 2021 and 2022.

Letter from an Unknown Woman

Adapted from Stefan Zweig's eponymous novel, "Letter from an Unknown Woman" marks another daring theatrical endeavor by theater director Meng Jinghui.

Throughout the performance, the heroine is the sole presence on stage, yet the production is infused with the director's boundless imagination. Featuring unique performance techniques, geometric stage design, impressionistic lighting, and minimalist visuals—all hallmarks of Meng's theatrical style—it offers audiences an unprecedented sensory experience, transporting them to an entirely different world.

Since its premiere in 2013, the play has been performed hundreds of times, achieving the remarkable feast of topping the box office of small theaters in China for five consecutive weeks.

Legend, 3 Bravers (Musical)

The musical created by Teatro de Lavradores, a drama troupe from Macao, incorporates fashion culture elements such as pop songs and street dance, so it is both family-friendly and educational in an entertaining manner. It narrates the tale of three bravers: Yixin, a stubborn and reckless hero; a forest wizard with superb hearing; and a silent ninja archer with exceptional sight.

The musical is a co-production by Macao young talented theatre, dance, and music artists, featuring famous actor and performance-educator Jacky Li as producer and director, Johnson Day as scriptwriter, and EK Wong for music composition.

Note that the performance on August 31 at 3 pm will feature sign language translators on stage. "I hope everyone can enjoy the show," said Jacky.

Dance drama 'Awakening Lion' to debut in Hong Kong this October

Dance drama "Awakening Lion" creatively combines elements of the Guangdong lion dance, Cantonese intangible cultural heritage, and the background of the Opium War. The fusion of lion dance, southern martial arts, and folk arts vividly showcases the spirit of Lingnan (located south of China's Five Ridges) culture and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Great Bay Area.

Since its debut in 2018, the dance drama has toured around the country, showcasing lion dance culture. It was named the best dance drama by the most prestigious dance award in China—the China Dance Lotus Awards.
