Guangzhou Opera House is celebrating its 13th anniversary from now till June 17, featuring 13 performances of different genres. The following are some highlights.
Der Fliegende Holländer, an opera in three acts created by German composer Richard Wagner, will be staged on May 5 and 7. The version presented in Guangzhou was co-produced by Shanghai Opera House and Germany’s Theater Erfurt, starring American baritone Todd Thomas and Chinese soprano He Hui.
A large-scale performance named Xinjiang Is a Nice Place will be presented on May 13 and 14. More than 200 people from over 20 art troupes across Xinjiang will work together to showcase the hospitality of Xinjiang locals and the evolution of the silk road culture.
Spartacus, an epic symphonic ballet, will be presented by Liaoning Ballet on June 6 and 7. Created by Russian ballet master Yuri Grigorovich, the ballet depicts the story of Spartacus and his slave girl Phrygia, who fall in love despite all hindrances in the 1st century BC, against the backdrop of the War of Spartacus.
The year 2023 marks the 130th anniversary of the death of Russian composer Tchaikovsky. To commemorate this master, DNA Trio, a Chinese chamber music group, will perform an adapted selection of Tchaikovsky's works.
The Best Picture-winning film Parasite will be transformed into a theatrical drama and presented from April 29 to May 1. In addition, La Cenerentola, an opera created by Gioacchino Rossini, an Italian opera writer, is the only high-definition screening performance this season, and it will be staged on June 4.
