Known as the mother of American modern dance, Martha Graham is named alongside Picasso and Stravinsky as one of the three giants of 20th-century art, and she was selected as the "Century Dancer" by Time. Since its establishment by Graham in 1926, the Martha Graham Dance Company has been a leader in the development of modern dance. Today, under the guidance of artistic director Janet Eilber, the company is trying to showcase Graham's works alongside newly commissioned works by contemporary artists, with rich narrative themes. The theme of their performance in China this year is "Dawn and the Future" and three classic pieces will be performed, including Appalachian Spring, Immediate Tragedy, and Canticle for Innocent Comedians.
