Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions colored sculptures make their first appearance in GBA

A promotional event centered around the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions colored sculptures and ancient castles in Jincheng, Shanxi Province, is underway at Grandview Mall in Guangzhou from September 15 to 17 during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, marking the first time that these sculptures of the Jade Emperor Temple in Jincheng appear in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

At the exhibition site, the audience was deeply attracted to the exquisite Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions colored sculptures. With delicate carvings, rich colors, and unique shapes, these sculptures seem to bring people back to the world of ancient mythology.

The release of Black Myth: Wukong triggered a new way of telling Chinese culture to the outside world. The constellation deity Kang Jin Long in the game, inspired by the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, is praised by players as one of the epic characters, attracting many gamers to visit Jincheng.

The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions are the constellation system by the ancient Chinese astronomers for observing the night sky. It consists of four quadrants based on the cardinal directions of north, south, east, and west, with each quadrant containing seven constellations. The clay sculptures of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions in the Jade Emperor Temple not only demonstrate the exquisite artistry of ancient sculpture but also serve as valuable materials for studying the history of Chinese astronomy.

This is also the first time to bring replicas of four cultural relics of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions to the GBA—Kang Jin Long, Lou Jin Gou, Xu Ri Shu, and Shi Huo Zhu, allowing visitors a close-up glimpse of their magnificence. In addition, the digitally replicated Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions will also be showcased to the audience.

These 1.8-meter-high sculptures, each with a small animal, are different in shape and demeanour, representing a perfect combination of realism and romanticism in ancient Chinese sculpture.

Jincheng, with 72 national key cultural relics protection units, ranks 4th among prefecture-level cities nationwide. It boasts a profound history and culture, picturesque Taihang Mountains, ancient castles of the Ming and Qing dynasties, and unique health and wellness resources.
