It's said that "One out of every three litchis in the world comes from Guangdong". Now the litchi season is in full swing in Guangdong, cultivars including Heiye, Nuomici and Guiwei have filled the fruit markets from April to mid-July. Dozens of orchards across the province offer a pick-your-own experience, and here are some recommendations for you!
Opening times of orchards vary with the ripening period of litchi cultivars. Remember to check with the orchard before your trip.
Guangzhou
Guangzhou accounts for one-seventh of the province's litchi cultivation area, with Zengcheng and Conghua districts being the main production areas. The city has over 70 varieties of litchi, most of which have small seeds and a honey-like taste. In addition to common cultivars like Guiwei and Nuomici, Xianjinfeng in Zengcheng as well as Jinggang Hongnuo and Liuxi Hongli in Conghua, are also popular among consumers at home and abroad.

Shenzhen
Shenzhen's soil and climate have created Nanshan litchi, a specialty here. With the main varieties of Nuomici, Guiwei and Feizixiao, Nanshan litchis are soft, juicy and sweet in flavour. Many of the litchi orchards have remained intact over the years. Every summer, Shenzhen residents can enjoy fresh litchis picked directly from the orchards.

Shantou
Leiling Town, Chaonan District, Shantou, is one of the main production areas of late ripening litchi in the province and the "hometown of litchi in eastern Guangdong". The town has a history of more than 500 years of litchi cultivation, with varieties such as Wuye, Guiwei, Nuomici, and Feizixiao.

Leiling Town has held the Leiling Litchi Cultural Tourism Festival for several years, and it will kick off on July 1 at the Leiling Litchi Theme Park this year. The event will feature a "Leiling litchi" bazaar, camping, parent-child games and more colorful activities, and visitors can also pick litchi in the orchard at the picking area.

Dongguan
Dongguan has a long history of litchi production, with patches of litchi orchards and litchi hills appearing as early as the Tang Dynasty. As the representative of Dongguan's high-end litchi, Houjie Bingli, which originates from Dajing village, Houjie Town, has bright red skin, sweet taste and tender flesh. It once fetched a high price of 2,000 RMB per catty.
