The festivities of Chinese New Year | Explore authentic Spring Festival folklore in Guangdong

During the Spring Festival, authentic folk activities and vibrant cultural tourism events are taking the stage in Guangdong. From Yingge dance to spectacular firework displays and captivating lion dance performances, the festivities promise a rich cultural experience.

Fire dragon dance

Puzhai fire dragon dance is a unique traditional program for celebrating the Lantern Festival in Puzhai Town, Fengshun County, Meizhou. Villagers dance in the Longshen area in Puzhai, praying for favorable weather, abundant harvests, and peaceful and prosperous years.

During this Spring Festival, the Puzhai fire dragon dance will be staged in the play "Thousand Years of Fire Dragon" at Meizhou's Dabao Mountain tourist resort. Furthermore, visitors can also see "iron flowers", a folk art performance of throwing molten iron to create fireworks during the play.

Lion dance

Yingge dance

Yingge dance, a representative of Teochew culture, weaves drama, martial arts, and dance into a captivating form of art. Inspired by the tales of 108 Heroes of the Ming Dynasty classic Chinese novel Water Margin, Yingge dances grace streets and squares during the Spring Festival.

Nian Li

The prevalent local festival of "Nian Li" in western Guangdong, especially in Maoming and Zhanjiang, is a traditional way of celebrating the new year. It is held in different villages on different dates in the first two months of the lunar calendar. The Nian Li festival is closely related to ancestral worship, sacrificial rites, and prayers for good weather and national prosperityIt features a communal meal and diverse folk arts such as Cantonese opera, puppetry, lion dances, acrobatics, flower boat parades, lantern fairs, and Piaose parades.
