Discover extended summer fun at Guangdong's museums

As scorching heat engulfs Guangdong, having an indoor exhibition tour becomes a better choice. This summer, museums across Guangdong are extending their opening hours, offering visitors a unique opportunity to delve into history and art.

Guangdong Museum

If there’s one museum in Guangdong you must visit, it is the well-known Guangdong Museum. From July 23 to August 31, the Museum will extend its daily operation time to 6 pm. The last entry is one hour before closing time at 5 pm.

On July 19, the 2024 "Night at the Museum" was launched and it will feature all kinds of activities to provide visitors with a cultural feast every Friday night until 8:30 pm. The last entry is one hour before closing time at 7:30 pm.

The most popular exhibition right now is Art of the Roman Empire, showcasing ancient treasures from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. This exhibition will last until October 13.

Other hot exhibitions during the summer include William Morris - Invigorating British Arts and Crafts (until October 30), Shadow Puppetry in China (until December 1), and Elegance, Refinement, Style - Paintings of Hua Yan (until October 7). 

Other museums in Guangzhou have also announced their new opening hours in some venues. For instance, the Zhenhai Tower Hall of Guangzhou Museum will also stay open until 8:30 pm every Friday. 

Opening hours in summer holiday: 9:00-18:00 (last entry at 17:00) from July 23 to August 31, with special night hours on Fridays until 20:30 (last entry at 19:30) from July 19 to August 30

Nanshan Museum, Shenzhen

"The Inca and Their Tawantinsuyu: The Land of Four Quarters" exhibition is now underway at the Nanshan Museum, featuring 168 relics from 14 museums in Peru. Visitors can appreciate the porcelain, metalware, wooden carvings, textiles, paintings, and even mummies up close until October 13, 2024.

Additionally, the ongoing "Exhibition of Zhou Dynasty Jade Artifacts Unearthed in Shanxi" at the museum features 113 exquisite jade treasures, offering insights into the jade culture during the Zhou Dynasty until September 1.

Zumiao Museum, Foshan

This summer, parts of the Zumiao Museum are open at night. As evening falls, lanterns illuminate the museum, casting a magical glow on the red walls and green tiles. Visitors can enjoy the Cantonese opera at the Wanfu Stage and watch lion dance performances at the Wong Fei-hung Memorial Hall.

Opening hours in summer holiday: 8:30-18:00, with special night hours on Saturdays from 18:00 to 21:00 (last ticket at 20:30); until August 31

Dongguan Museum

To offer more convenient access for summer visitors, Dongguan Museum has not only extended the operation hours but also lifted the requirement of making reservations in advance.

From mid-July to the end of August, the Museum will open from 8:45 am to 5:30 pm every Tuesday to every Sunday. It will close on Monday, except for the statutory holidays.

Should you pay a visit to Dongguan, you won’t be let down by this largest and most comprehensive museum in the city because the first exhibition of Manwangdui Han dynasty tombs relics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was launched here.

The exhibition “Immortality” will last until August 25. With a total exhibit of 313 pieces, it sheds light on the social landscape of the western Han dynasty. There are 103 precious cultural relics and 24 first-grade cultural relics.

Zhongshan Museum

The Zhongshan Museum (including the Xiangshan Commercial Culture Museum) will extend its hours by 30 minutes to one hour during the summer. The special exhibition "Heroes in the Era of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty" showcases 182 precious artifacts from 16 cultural institutions across Shaanxi, Gansu, Shandong, and Guangdong provinces. Among them, 30 are first-class relics, vividly depicting the life and times of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty.

Huizhou Museum

During this summer vacation, Huizhou Museum will extend the operation hours of the first floor to 8 pm on every Friday and Saturday until August 31. The second, third and fourth floors won’t open in the evening.

There are two new exhibitions on the first floor. The one on bronze mirrors and female power is highly recommended. More than 60 ancient bronze mirrors are on display, covering historical periods such as the Warring States, the Qin and Han dynasties, and the Tang and Song dynasties.

The Museum has organized all kinds of activities related to the bronze mirrors. For instance, you can paint your own mirror through DIY and win special cultural and creative products by reciting a poem about the mirror. The exhibition will last until October. Don't miss out on it this summer!
