South-South Cooperation: New center promises tech transfer between China, Latin America and the Caribbean

A new center aimed at boosting scientific cooperation between China, Latin America and the Caribbean has been inaugurated Wednesday in the southern Chinese city of Dongguan. Cao Chufeng has the details.

The new China-Latin America and Caribbean, or China-LAC Technology Transfer Center, is the only national-level institution for cross-border technology transfers between China, Latin America and the Caribbean.

ZHANG GUANGJUN, Vice Minister, Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology "China, Latin American and Caribbean countries should set a new example of South-South cooperation in the new era through high-level, high-quality cooperation, and the transfer of scientific and technological achievements."

Other technology transfer centers have already been established between China and other parts of the world, including countries in ASEAN, and Central and Eastern Europe. The centers aim to open up Chinese science to the rest of the world. The university in charge of operating the new LAC center in Dongguan says key areas of cooperation have been established.

MA HONGWEI, Head Master, Dongguan University of Technology "For the next three years, we plan to focus on several fields, including new energy, next-generation information technology, disaster prevention and emergency response. Scientific research institutions and companies in China, especially in the Greater Bay Area, have rich experience in these areas."

The LAC center will focus on in-depth cooperation among enterprises, research institutes and universities from China, Latin America and the Caribbean. One expert says there's room for greater levels of cooperation between the different parties.

ADALBERTO NOYOLA, Director, UNAM-CHINA National Autonomous University of Mexico "We got lots of opportunities to improve it to increase it. I hope these centers will have that platform, to increase our cooperation activities in Science and technology."

CAO CHUFENG Dongguan "The Technology Transfer Center is in Guangdong Province, a place that already enjoys a good trading relationship with Latin America, accounting for one-fifth of the total trade volume between China and the region. Local government hopes the center will aid the development of the science industry across the Greater Bay Area. Cao Chufeng, CGTN, Dongguan."
