On July 3rd, Daniel Russel, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, answered questions on Sino-US relations and multilateralism from GDToday reporter at the 11th World Peace Forum.
He held that the diminishing effectiveness of global multilateral organizations has spawned the rise of minilateral groupings, as well as more purpose-focused or smaller regional organizations, and to strengthen multilateralism, it calls for mutual trust and commitment by the world’s major powers.
Russel believes that ASEAN has played a key role in maintaining regional stability and prosperity. “ASEAN, as a platform and the convener, can put the US, China, Russia, and other middle powers on the equal footing. We are all guests in the home of ASEAN, ” and meaningful cooperation among nations in the context of East Asia will be promoted.
