Panyu District's Shawan Bridge temporarily closes its toll gates as of July 11, after days of controversy that the bridge kept charging the toll fee, disregarding the provincial government's mandate to stop it.

It has been several days since drivers found the bridge kept charging the same toll fee even after the Guangdong Government ordered the cancellation of the charge of 31 tolled highways within the province, including Shawan Bridge, on July 1. Guangzhou's transportation commission later explained the toll fee was not canceled because it included the charge of four other tolled highways which were not officially canceled.

Now with the suspension of Shawan Bridge's toll fee charging, the highways whose charges were included by Shawan Bridge will be free accordingly. Panyu's Zini Bridge and Nansha's Xiahengli Bridge, which also include the charges of other tolled highways, will have all charges canceled too.

According to local newspaper New Express, the authorities have made an agreement with the operators of the three bridges; therefore charges may be permanently canceled.
