Guangzhou's seven largest department stores recorded combined retail sales of RMB 350 million over the seven-day Chinese New Year holiday.
Despite increasing competition with online retailers, those major department stores reported that sales of jewelry and home appliances rose by 10 percent year-on-year.
The 130 retailers monitored by Guangzhou Municipal Commission of Commerce reported combined sales of about RMB 2.1 billion in the seven-day holiday, a slight rise compared with the same period last year. Gold markets remained stable during the holiday.
The 116 meat and vegetable markets, supermarkets, and the retailers of vegetable, grain, grocery, aquatic food and other food monitored by the Commission reported combined sales of RMB 1.7 billion, up 4.7 percent year-on-year.
