No matter in what era, fundamental education is an eternal hot topic for human-beings. Schools, center of basic education, always receive people's universal attention. Under the context of globalization and information explosion, international dialogues focus on education as well as schools become popular.
On No.6th, Symposium on the Modernization of School Governance, School Management and Evaluation was held in Pui Ching Middle School of Guangzhou. Co-held by Guangdong Academy of Education and British Council, the symposium invited 4 headmasters from renowned English schools and 5 from schools of Yuexiu District of Guangzhou to join the dialogue.
“The interaction on basic education between China and the U.K. is an excellent display of diversified development of school for both two countries.” said Angus Bjarnason, consul of the British Council, Guangzhou. “In this year’s October and November, 59 headmasters from the U.K. were grouped to visited 59 middle and primary schools in China. They forged sister-school with each other and all of the 59 English schools expressed their willing to open Chinese class in their schools.”
“With the developing of Chinese economic, the communication on basic education between China and the U.K. will be better and better.” Bjarnason added.
The theme of the symposium is school governance, school management and evaluation.
“The U.K. has ISI inspection system to make sure the schools meet government’s purpose, but keep freedom of headmasters as well. It allows the Head to respond issues in his own way, to set priorities for improvement, to involve teachers in improvement and to act honestly.” said Alex McGrath, Head of King’s Ely Senior School, in his lecture.
However, Zeng Youxian, the Head of Guangzhou No.7 Middle School, indicated that the school reform should practice with the reality. He then listed six major problems existed in Chinese schools, related to the large number of students, exam-oriented, knowledge transfer, student’s personality, ability training and the truth of knowledge.
All of the headmasters gave their own insight and experience on the theme. Some of them even regretted the limit of time for communication. But we can prospect the bright future for Sino-British educational communication through the great atmosphere of the symposium.
