Basketball game in Guangdong feels like sports carnival

On March 21, the opening game of Yue BA, the Guangdong City Basketball League, tipped off at Tianhe Sports Center, and from the very beginning, the atmosphere said everything.

"Zhongshan unbeatable!" one fan shouted, his voice cutting through the noise of the crowd. Inside the arena, the energy never really settled. Every play drew a reaction. Every moment felt alive.

"Every moment is intense," another spectator said. "Zhongshan was behind many times, but kept coming back. Really exciting."

As the game went on, the tension only grew. In the final minutes, the crowd reached a peak."The last few minutes were amazing," a fan said, still visibly excited. "So great, really impressive."

Even those without a direct hometown connection found themselves pulled in."Even though I'm from another province, I support Team Guangzhou," one attendee said. "They played wonderfully, very competitive, back and forth."

But YueBA is not only about what happens on the court.

Beyond the game itself, each team brings something of its own city to the event. During the opening ceremony, traditional elements like lion dance, martial arts, tea culture, and local food all take center stage, turning the arena into something closer to a cultural showcase.

At one point, even a live chicken made an appearance, drawing laughter and surprise from the crowd. As one visitor put it, "This honestly feels more like a festival than just a game."And in many ways, that's exactly what it is.

What truly sets YueBA apart is its players. None of them are professionals. Some are still in college. "It's my third year," said Long Jia'en, a player from Zhongshan who studies at Shenzhen University. Others are already working. Yuan Jinyao, another player from Zhongshan, runs a local basketball training institute, teaching kids how to play the game.

Their schedules are far from that of full-time athletes. They train after work or after school, whenever they can. They are not here for contracts. They are playing for their city. Of course, this is competition. But it doesn't feel like that's the most important thing. It is more like a sports carnival.

In YueBA, basketball becomes a way to connect. Different cities, different people, all brought together through the same court, the same crowd, the same energy. It gives people something to look forward to on the weekend, somewhere to go, something to share. It's simple, but it matters.
