The tiny creature "humming a tune" in front of us—only half the length of a pinky finger—is the first new species ever found in Foshan and officially named after the city.
Though small in size, it has a striking name — Leptobrachella Kungfu. Netizens affectionately call it the "Kungfu Frog."
Foshan has long been known as the "City of Kung Fu." By giving it this name, researchers hope to promote the profound martial arts culture of Foshan and even whole China to the world.
Researchers discovered it around Laoxiang Mountain in Genghe Town, Gaoming District, Foshan in April this year. Recently, the related research findings were published in the international zoological taxonomy journal ZooKeys, drawing widespread attention.
This little creature is highly sensitive to its environment—even the water quality is slightly poor, it's hard for it to survive.
In fact, Genghe Town boasts exceptional natural conditions and ecological resources. In recent years, with Xiangshan Mountain, the "second-highest peak in Foshan", as its core, Genghe has been building the Greater Bay Area's first wellness-themed holiday resort.
You might take a trip to Genghe. Who knows? The next new species might be discovered by you!
