Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is paying a six-day visit to China from July 12, his second since taking office in 2022. The visit comes amid heightened global trade tensions driven by U.S. President Donald Trump's shifting tariff policies, and marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement.
Speaking to South, James Laurenceson, director of the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney, said Canberra had "flat out rejected" suggestions from Washington to reduce trade with China. "The reality is," he added, "U.S. tariff pressure only makes China more important for Australia."
China remains Australia's largest two-way trading partner, accounting for nearly a third of its exports. A recent study by the Bankwest Curtin Economics Center found that trade with China added an average of AUD 2,600 to each Australian household incomes in 2022-23.
