The Shakou bamboo shoots from Zhangcha, Foshan are known as the "National Bamboo Shoots." In 1972, when U.S. President Nixon visited China, Shakou bamboo shoots were selected for the official banquet.
Great ingredients often require only the simplest cooking. Trim the crunchiest, sweetest part of the shoot, simmer in salted water, chill in cold water, and serve over ice— that's Chilled Shakou Bamboo Shoots.
Dip them in soy sauce and wasabi, take a bite, and you'll experience that crisp, refreshing, tender flavor — no fiber, all pleasure.
There's also a creative twist —the "Shakou Bamboo Cup," where diced bamboo shoots are mixed with shrimp and pork and deep-fried to perfection, creating a rich, layered texture.
Shakou bamboo shoots are only harvested during their golden season from June to August, so every bite is a limited-edition taste.
The 11th National Bamboo Shoot Food & Culture Carnival will be held on June 22 at Yintian Hotel in Zhangcha, under the theme “Feast of Bamboo Shoots: A Taste of Zhangcha.”
Highlights include a giant bamboo shoot congee, the Bamboo Shoot King Contest, a bamboo-themed market, and a tasting event for over a thousand guests—bringing locals and visitors an unforgettable celebration of food and culture.
Miss it now, and you'll have to wait another year —don't miss your chance to taste this seasonal delight!
