"America is developing Cold War–style policies in an attempt to compete with China and maintain American hegemony—much as it did with the Soviet Union," said Robert S. Ross, a professor of political science at Boston College.
Ross's research focuses on China's security and defense policies, as well as U.S.-China relations. He often examines the relationship through the lens of "power transition."
In his view, competition between China and the United States is inevitable, but China is capable of pushing back. "I am pessimistic about the prospects for improving relations," Ross said, "but I am optimistic that we can avoid a war."
