For over ten years, medical teams from China's Guangdong Province have been working hand-in-hand with healthcare professionals in Fiji, bringing not only expertise but also hope. At the Colonial War Memorial Hospital—Fiji's largest—this cooperation stands as a powerful symbol of cross-Pacific solidarity.
From complex coronary interventions to managing diabetes and other endocrine disorders, Chinese doctors have shared advanced techniques and clinical experience. As Dr. Luo Songyuan, a cardiovascular specialist, recalls, a recent three-vessel disease case that once would have required bypass surgery was successfully treated with minimally invasive intervention—a first for Fiji.
But the partnership goes beyond surgery. It's about sustainability. Fijian doctors like Dr. Shahin Nusair speak highly of the knowledge exchange—especially in challenging procedures like bifurcation lesions, where Chinese techniques offered new solutions not commonly practiced elsewhere.
Training has been central to the mission. Fijian medical staff have traveled to Guangdong for specialist training, while in Fiji, the South Pacific Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine—founded by Dr. Tu Zhihui, who chose to stay on after his medical mission out of passion—now offers courses in acupuncture, massage therapy, and herbal medicine. "We're not just treating diseases—we're training local talent to carry the work forward," says Dr. Tu.
The impact is tangible. "The people of Fiji have really benefited," says hospital superintendent Luke Nasedra. From crowded outpatient halls to the cath lab, Chinese and Fijian colleagues work side by side—saving lives, sharing skills, and building a medical bridge that grows stronger with each passing year.
At its heart, this mission is simple: saving lives. And across the vast Pacific, that shared purpose continues to bring two nations closer.
