The 2025 China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) has emerged as a vibrant hub for Asia's ACGN (Animation, Comic, Game, and Novel) community, with Shenzhen solidifying its reputation as China's "otaku capital." From electrifying esports tournaments to cross-border cultural exchanges, the event underscores the rising global influence of Chinese pop culture.
At Hall 14, the 2025 Asia-Pacific Esports Games drew thunderous applause as retired professional players of Honor of Kings, China's blockbuster mobile MOBA, faced off in intense 1v1 showdowns. A champion claimed a 5,000 yuan cash prize handed to them personally by cosplayers dressed as iconic anime characters—a blend of gaming and fandom that thrilled attendees.
The fair's anime and gaming zones buzzed with excitement for Chinese-made hits. Films like Ne Zha 2 and games such as Black Myth: Wukong drew massive crowds, reflecting their international acclaim. "These works rival Western animations in production quality," noted a visitor, "especially in their visual effects and storytelling."
"Taking Chinese ACGN global isn't just about exhibitions," explained Xintong, a representative from CPOP4U, a platform promoting Chinese content abroad. "It requires hyper-localization—multilingual subtitles, regional dubbing, and tailored merchandise." She shared that Singapore fans flew to Malaysia just to buy our Malaysia-exclusive Chinese anime merchandise at the comic feast.
Beyond the fair, Shenzhen's openness to niche subcultures signals a broader shift. "ACGN is no longer fringe," said an organizer. "It's infiltrating mainstream entertainment, fashion, and even tourism." The city's "itasha" (anime-wrapped vehicles) and cosplay-friendly public spaces exemplify this fusion.
