"We are witnessing an interesting and consequential moment—the simultaneous rise, or reemergence, of India and China as major global powers," Ashok Kantha recently said in an exclusive interview with South.
Kantha, a retired Indian diplomat with more than 38 years in the Indian Foreign Service, served as India's ambassador to China from 2014 to 2016.
Despite complex ties and unresolved disputes, he argued that New Delhi and Beijing should seek common ground on regional and global issues and manage this parallel rise in a mutually supportive way.
"India and China are two of the world's most populous nations and among its five largest economies," Kantha said. "How we handle this process will be consequential—not only for our two countries, but for the world as a whole."
