J. Cole makes CBA debut in China: "I've really been enjoying it"

American rapper and Grammy-winning artist J. Cole surprised fans in China this week—not with a new album, but with a basketball debut.

On April 11, the 41-year-old hip-hop icon took to the court in Nanjing, the capital of eastern China‘s Jiangsu Province, representing the Nanjing Monkey Kings in a Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) game against the Guangzhou Loong Lions. Known globally for his music, Cole has long had a deep passion for basketball—one that continues to shape his journey beyond the stage.

While many recognize him as a major figure in global hip-hop, Cole's connection to the sport runs deep. He previously played in the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and has now made his third appearance in a professional basketball setting. For him, stepping onto the court in China is not just about competition, but also about personal growth and cultural exchange.

Though the Nanjing Monkey Kings fell to the Guangzhou Loong Lions, 81:95, J. Cole remained positive. "I'm not afraid to fail or fall on my face in front of the world," Cole said courtside. "If I have zero points or if I have twenty points, the win for me is just doing it and trying."

It was Cole's first visit to China, and he described the opportunity as both unexpected and meaningful.

"I've never been to China before. There was an opportunity to come visit, and also an opportunity to play basketball," he said. "As I get older, for them to give me a chance to play professionally—it's a blessing for me."

Beyond the game itself, Cole highlighted his experience training with Chinese teammates and immersing himself in the local culture.

"It's cool to see the level of Chinese talent and how they play. I was impressed," he said. "I've been here for a while now, soaking up the culture and the people. I've really been enjoying it."

His presence on the court drew attention not only from basketball fans, but also from a younger generation who see him as a bridge between music, sports, and global culture. While language and background may differ, the game itself offers a shared space—one defined by passion, discipline, and mutual respect.
