A new multilingual media platform under China's Nanfang Media Group was officially launched on July 3, aiming to enhance the country's international communication efforts from its southern province of Guangdong.
The platform, named South, succeeds GDToday and aims to establish dedicated channels for all 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong. It also plans to strengthen its news bureaus in China's Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions as part of broader efforts to deepen media cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).
Since launching its Hong Kong and Macao operations in 2021, the platform has introduced a localized brand, Hong Kong Today, which has produced a series of original reports on the implementation of "one country, two systems" and regional integration. Its coverage has been well received in both Hong Kong and Macao.
Kwong Mei-wan, Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress, expressed her hope that the upgraded platform will continue to serve as a bridge between Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, helping international audiences better understand the GBA and southern China.
According to the platform, South now includes a multilingual news website, an English-language mobile app, social media operations targeting overseas audiences, and partnerships with international media. Together, these channels reach over 20 million users worldwide.
Since 2021, South has published more than 50,000 news pieces. Its content has been cited over 8,000 times by international media outlets across 19 languages, with a total global reach exceeding 2.5 billion. The platform has also launched its signature event series, "South Salon," hosting more than 90 events in 24 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
