Singapore defence minister: Traditional security concepts are evolving

Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing says the traditional understanding of security is undergoing a major transformation, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected across regions and domains.

"There's a shift in the concept of conventional security," Chan said in a recent interview with South. He noted that regional security ties are now closer than many once thought, with leaders in Europe, for example, increasingly discussing how their security is linked to developments in the Asia-Pacific.

Another key change, Chan explained, lies in how security itself is defined. "In the past, security was viewed strictly through the lens of specific military domains," he said. "Today, there is greater recognition of other dimensions—such as economic security—and how they intersect with traditional defence concerns."

Chan added that while past security thinking focused heavily on the "kinetic phase" of warfare, priorities are shifting. "Today, people are equally concerned about the security and resilience of supply chains," he said.
