How China shapes skills and growth across borders

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025 is being held in Tianjin, the largest port city in northern China, from August 31 to September 1. Since its founding in 2001, the SCO has extended cooperation from security into areas such as education. The Luban Workshop program is a notable example of this broader engagement.

Named after the legendary Chinese craftsman Lu Ban, the initiative links Chinese schools with overseas educational institutions, enterprises, and governments, focusing on fields including manufacturing, new energy, artificial intelligence, electronics, and transportation.

Launched and promoted by Tianjin municipality, the program has established 10 workshops across eight SCO countries, training more than 15,000 skilled professionals. On a global scale, 34 Luban Workshops now operate in 30 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa.

South reporter Liu Xiaodi conducted on-site interviews with student and teacher representatives from the program. They highlighted how Luban Workshops provide hands-on experience with advanced equipment, prepare students for careers in high-tech industries, and foster shared development among participating countries.
