Architects and students from Macao have showcased innovative designs for an ecological conservation area in Hengqin during a recent architectural design competition, contributing fresh ideas for biodiversity and sustainable development in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

The second Architectural Design Competition, which focused on the Hengqin Southern Lagoon Ecological Conservation Area Architectural Concept Design, invited both Macao architects and university students, while fostering cooperation between Hengqin and Macao and providing a platform for professional practice.
Judging was completed on January 17, with an awards ceremony and a public exhibition of shortlisted entries set to open on January 26 at the Hengqin Cultural & Art Complex.
The competition included a professional category, open to members of the Architects Association of Macau or Macao architects registered in Hengqin, as well as a newly added student category aimed at encouraging creativity among architecture undergraduates.
Interest in the contest was strong, with 20 design proposals submitted in just one month. Many focused on facilities such as bird protection centers, observation decks, and scientific research paths, combining ecological monitoring, research, and education. Together, the proposals aim to create a model migratory-bird conservation hub that merges scientific value, practical function, and harmony with nature.
