One of the world's most exciting vocal bands is heading to China this summer. On June 29, SLIXS, the award-winning a cappella ensemble from Germany, will perform at the Guangzhou Opera House, presenting a bold concert titled "Quer Bach."
Who is SLIXS?
SLIXS is a world-renowned a cappella ensemble from Germany known for pushing the boundaries of a cappella music. With a unique lineup of five male voices and one female soprano, SLIXS creates powerful, daring works that blend genres such as jazz, pop, classical, and world music—all performed using only the human voice.
The group is celebrated for its technical brilliance, inventive arrangements, and theatrical stage presence. They have received some of the world's highest awards for vocal art, including Best Jazz Song of the Year 2008, Best Folk/World Song of the Year 2013, Best Classical Song of the Year 2019 and 2023, as well as Best Classical Album of the Year 2023 at the CARA (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards), making this sextet one of the best vocal bands in the world.

What is A Cappella?
A cappella is a form of music performed entirely with the human voice—no instruments involved. Singers use their voices not only to carry the melody and harmonies but also to mimic instruments like drums, bass, and brass.
This vocal-only approach creates rich, layered soundscapes that span genres from classical to jazz, pop, and beyond. It showcases vocal skill and creativity, turning the human voice into a full orchestra.
This year marks 340 years since the birth of Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the most influential composers in Western music history. SLIXS has chosen to honor him in their own way—not by copying his music, but by reimagining it vocally from the ground up.
In "Quer Bach," expect to hear familiar works like the Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 - V. No. 7, reinterpreted entirely through voice. With clever arrangements and vocal effects, the singers bring new life and emotion to Bach's intricate melodies and structures. It's Bach, but not as you know it—fresh, surprising, and alive with modern energy.
