For the first time, Guangdong has conducted a systematic assessment of the population status of Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla), estimating the provincial wild population at approximately 1,778 individuals, with a baseline density of 0.33 individuals per square kilometer. Meizhou, Heyuan, and Huizhou are identified as core distribution areas, where local populations are showing steady recovery.

Listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, the species was upgraded to a National First-Class Protected Animal in China in 2020. So far, 35 key habitats have been established nationwide, forming a well-structured in-situ conservation network. Huidong County in Huizhou City is one of the key protection areas. In late 2018, a live Chinese pangolin was captured on camera for the first time in Wuqinzhang Mountain, marking the start of targeted conservation efforts in Huidong.

Since 2022, with support from the Forestry Administration of Guangdong Province, Huidong County has advanced the development of the Wuqinzhang Provincial-level Public Ecological Forest Demonstration Zone, including upgrading patrol roads, conducting habitat vegetation surveys and biodiversity assessments, and establishing monitoring sample points for key species such as the Chinese pangolin.

With professional patrol teams in place, enhanced public awareness campaigns, and sustained ecological conservation efforts, the ecological environment of Wuqinzhang Mountain has improved significantly. Pangolin habitats have been further optimized, and the local population is gradually recovering. So far, 36 species of rare animals have been recorded in Huidong County, highlighting the effectiveness of local conservation efforts.
