As the world prepares to mark the 20th anniversary of "Earth Hour" on March 28, the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin has launched a district-wide initiative to join the global environmental movement.

Aimed at showcasing Hengqin’s commitment to combating climate change and protecting natural ecosystems, the local "Hengqin Carbonians" program is calling on all landmark buildings, public spaces, and residents to go dark for sixty minutes, joining over 190 countries in the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment.
The main event is scheduled for March 28, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. During this time, major landmarks and public facilities across Hengqin will switch off facade lighting and non-essential decorative lights.
Residents are also encouraged to participate by turning off redundant household lights and stepping away from digital screens to appreciate the natural night sky with their families.
To capture the collective impact of this movement, the community is invited to submit horizontal videos or photos of their blackout activities to cschenxl@hengqin.gov.cn by April 10.
Hengqin’s celebration of the planet extends well beyond the sixty minutes of darkness. Earlier in the same afternoon, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, a low-carbon DIY workshop will be held outside the Artyzen Habitat Hotel near the Hengqin Port.
The event allows participants to hand-paint personalized eco-friendly badges, symbolizing their pledge to the Earth. In a further commitment to sustainability, attendees who check in at the event can unlock a complimentary afternoon tea, provided they bring their own reusable cups.
As the lights go out at 8:30 PM, the focus shifts to a curated cinematic experience held at the 5th-floor lounge of the Artyzen Habitat Hotel, featuring a screening of the documentary film Extreme Realm: Above the Glaciers.
