Runners scale peaks in Qingyuan, where three Chinese provinces meet

In the mountains of Lianshan, Qingyuan City, where Guangdong, Hunan, and Guangxi converge, more than a thousand runners gathered on October 19 for one of southern China's most scenic cross-country races. The 2025 Guangdong (Lianshan) Cross-Country Race combined rugged trails with rich cultural traditions, set in a region locals call an "oxygen bar" for its crisp, clean air.

The 50-kilometer route, dubbed a "bridge of geographical connection," wound through iconic landscapes like Jinzishan Peak, Furong Mountain, and the terraced fields of Gaoliao. At 1,435 meters above sea level, runners traversed alpine meadows with sweeping views spanning three provinces. For many, the challenging terrain was not only a physical test but also a tangible encounter with the idea of cross-regional unity.

Along the route, Yao performers played traditional long drums in mountain villages as Zhuang singers echoed folk melodies across the valleys. Participants refueled with local snacks and warm tea, while shorter "fun run" sections featured vibrant displays of dance horses and fiery lion dances. The event also included a side competition and an online platform aimed at using sports to strengthen cultural exchange.
