Baiyun Airport sees over 100 mln yuan tax refund claims in first four months

According to customs data, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport processed over 4,600 tax refund claims from outbound overseas travelers in the first four months of 2025, with the total refund amount exceeding 104 million yuan. These figures show year-on-year increases of 195% and 149%, respectively.

On April 27, the Ministry of Commerce and five other departments announced further optimization of the departure tax refund policy. The minimum spending threshold for tax refunds was lowered from 500 yuan to 200 yuan. While there is no limit on refunds processed via bank transfers, the cash refund ceiling was raised from 10,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan. Authorities are also expanding the number of tax refund shops and eligible products. These enhancements, alongside the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, are helping to boost inbound tourism and consumption.

"This trip to China has been fantastic. I had a great time and bought a lot of things, including a smartphone and kitchen appliances," said Karen, a tourist from Australia, while applying for a tax refund. Her claim form listed product names, unit prices and tax amounts, and the refund rate was 11%.

Outbound travelers need only present the purchased goods, the application form, the invoices, and a valid passport or ID at the customs declaration counter. After verifying, the refund is processed promptly.

At peak times, three to four travelers may apply for refunds simultaneously. During a smart customs information system, the average wait time per person remains under 10 minutes.

The counters provide around-the-clock, multilingual service and consultation. Clear signage and step-by-step guides are provided to assist travelers. Additionally, customs authorities have strengthened cooperation with tax and banking institutions, improving data exchange and enabling rapid goods verification and real-time system processing.
