The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin held its 2026 High-Quality Development Conference on February 24, setting priorities for industrial and services coordination through closer Hengqin-Macao collaboration.

The conference emphasized Hengqin's evolving role as it enters the second phase of its development under China's 15th Five-Year Plan. Officials outlined opportunities arising from deeper Macao integration, national strategic shifts, and broader technological and industrial transformation.

According to the authorities, Hengqin's core industries, including sci-tech research and high-end manufacturing, cultural tourism, convention and exhibition, and modern finance, now account for 67.1 percent of regional GDP, surpassing the mid-term target of 65 percent. Integration with Macao has strengthened, with an increasing number of Macao-invested enterprises and higher port traffic. Major initiatives such as the Macao International Airport cargo hub, an international education city, and innovation parks are progressing steadily.

Hengqin plans to enhance policy engagement, attract projects closely linked to Macao with strong employment potential, and redevelop idle buildings into mixed-use spaces for industry, housing, and commercial purposes. Officials are tasked with setting clear timelines and responsibilities for key projects, focusing on regulatory alignment and coordination with the central departments.
