Recently, spoon-billed sandpipers were spotted at Santouju Beach in Yangxi County, Yangjiang — about ten days earlier than last year — marking the earliest autumn arrival on record.
The spoon-billed sandpiper is one of the most endangered species, with fewer than 800 individuals remaining worldwide.
Santouju Beach is known as a "paradise for birds," with its expansive mudflats and lush vegetation providing abundant food for migratory species like the spoon-billed sandpiper.
In recent years, Yangxi County has improved coastal vegetation coverage and carried out regular beach-cleaning campaigns to create a better habitat for wildlife. More than 100 species of migratory birds are now recorded in Yangxi each year.
