In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, China's tech hub Shenzhen has opened its doors to global innovators once again. On October 14 (local time), the Netherlands' Eindhoven hosted its regional final of the 9th China (Shenzhen) Innovation and Entrepreneurship International Competition, marking the official start of overseas qualifying rounds. From now until early November, contests will take place across 11 global cities, with winners advancing to Shenzhen for the grand finale.
A global platform for innovation collaboration
Under the theme "Fostering International Connections, Embracing Innovative Prospects," the competition aims to connect cutting-edge global projects with China's industrial ecosystem. Beyond a mere contest, it serves as a hub for cross-border talent exchange and idea fusion. Shenzhen, renowned for its efficient governance, vibrant tech scene, and inclusive urban ethos, offers overseas ventures a gateway to China's market and supply chains.
Worldwide reach, strategic networking
This year's event spans 11 innovation hotspots: Barcelona, Boston, Eindhoven, London, Munich, Paris, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Toronto, and Zurich, creating a transcontinental innovation network. The Eindhoven leg alone drew 207 applications, with 21 high-tech projects competing in the final. Zhu Wu, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Municipal Government, emphasized the event's role in deepening Shenzhen-Eindhoven collaboration, stating, "We aim to help Dutch startups integrate into China's market and Shenzhen's industrial ecosystem, fostering sustainable growth through talent, project, and capital synergy."
Expert judging and prizewinners emerge
A panel of industry veterans, academics, and investors evaluated projects based on innovation, business models, market potential, and alignment with Shenzhen's industries. The winning project, "AI and Quantitative Modeling Driven Trading Platform of Electricity Markets," excelled in green tech innovation. Other winners included TimeLab (biomedicine), Zhikong Tupu (advanced equipment mapping), RoboSkin (new materials), and projects focused on magnetic energy and smart marine aquaculture. Top performers will advance to sector-specific finals, competing for the championship title.
Beyond competition: ecosystem support
The event also serves as a resource-matching platform, linking local institutions with Shenzhen's ecosystem. Participants gain immediate access to China's market and collaboration opportunities. Shenzhen's entrepreneurial environment, built on robust industries and streamlined services, ensures rapid prototyping and commercialization.
Comprehensive support for startups
Finalists will receive travel and accommodation subsidies, while winners may secure up to 1 million RMB (US$138,000) in startup grants. Shenzhen's 48 overseas student entrepreneurship parks offer over 4 million square meters of incubation space, including two years of free office rent, significantly reducing operational costs.
Industry alignment for market success
The competition's seven sectors—electronics, digital fashion, advanced equipment, green tech, new materials, biomedicine, and marine economy—mirror Shenzhen's industrial strengths. Participants can tap into platforms like Huawei and Tencent or secure funding from investors such as Green Pine Capital and HongShan. This ecosystem accelerates the translation of innovations into market-ready solutions.
Shenzhen's global commitment
The 9th edition of the competition underscores Shenzhen's dedication to shared growth. With a solid industrial foundation, business-friendly policies, and an open innovation culture, the city positions itself as an ideal launchpad for global innovators. As the organizer emphasized, Shenzhen is not just a host but a partner in turning bold ideas into impactful realities. For aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide, the message is clear: Shenzhen offers more than a competition—it provides a pathway to success in one of the world's most dynamic innovation economies.
