Hengqin sees holiday tourism boost on cross-border travel

The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin experienced significant growth during the 2026 Chinese New Year holiday, fueled by increased cross-border travel with Macao.

Between February 15 and 23, major attractions in Hengqin welcomed over 759,000 visitors, marking a 7.2% increase from the previous year. Border traffic at Hengqin Port reached approximately 936,000 passenger trips and over 93,000 vehicle crossings by February 24, representing year-on-year increases of 26.2% and 49.5%, respectively, with the busiest day recording 127,000 crossings.

Retails surged across Hengqin's main commercial districts, including Hengqin Huafa Mall, Legend Ponto Plaza, and Qinming Plaza. Hengqin Huafa Mall alone saw more than 400,000 visits during the holiday, with sales exceeding 10 million yuan. Foot traffic peaked on February 19, when daily visitor numbers surpassed 70,000.

Hengqin Passenger Terminal handled nearly 60,000 passenger trips, a 20% increase from the previous year. Traditional island-hopping routes remained the most popular, while sightseeing services offering views of both Hengqin and Macao more than doubled their passenger numbers.
