An open wildlife overpass in Shenzhen is attracting global attention for its innovative, eco-friendly design. On February 3, Lin Jian, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, highlighted the project on social media, praising it as a vivid example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
In a post on his official X account, Lin shared images of the Kunpeng Trail No.1 Bridge, noting that it spans a highway to connect two mountain areas in the city, allowing animals to move freely in search of food. A defining feature of the bridge is its surface, which is fully covered with native vegetation, creating a dedicated habitat rather than a conventional passage.
Opened in early 2024, the bridge crosses the Meiguan Highway, linking the Yinhu and Meilin mountain ranges. Designed with wildlife as the top priority, only about one-tenth of the deck is reserved for a narrow pedestrian path, while the rest is shaped and planted to resemble the surrounding mountain landscape. Motion-activated infrared cameras have already recorded hundreds of animal crossings, including leopard cats and wild boars, indicating swift adoption by local wildlife.
The project is part of Shenzhen's broader effort to restore ecological connectivity disrupted by urban development. Features such as climbing-plant trellises and protective nets clearly separate human and animal spaces while providing shade and safety. The soil-covered sections support dozens of plant species, offering food and shelter and enabling safer movement and genetic exchange for wildlife across the city.
The bridge has drawn widespread praise online, with users calling it a reminder that true urban development goes beyond economic growth. The project reflects Shenzhen's ongoing commitment to building a sustainable city where modernization advances hand in hand with biodiversity protection.
