Stay alert! Red imported fire ants reported in Guangdong

Authorities have warned of sightings of red imported fire ants (RIFA) in parts of Guangdong Province, urging the public to stay cautious in parks, lawns, and roadside green spaces. People are advised not to touch or step on small mound-like soil piles, which may indicate RIFA nests. Disturbing them can trigger aggressive attacks.

Native to South America, the RIFA is listed among the "100 of the World's Worst Invasive Alien Species" and classified as a major quarantine pest in China. These ants are similar in appearance to common ant species but typically have a reddish body. Their nests, often dome-shaped and over 10 cm high, are commonly found in open, sunlit areas such as parks, farmland, and orchards.

Stings from RIFA can cause intense burning pain and blisters. While most people experience mild discomfort, some may have severe allergic reactions, including fever, vomiting, hives, shock, and, in rare cases, death.

Guangdong is one of the worst-affected regions in China, with peak activity usually occurring from March to May and September to November. So far this year, cases have been identified in parks such as Baiyun Lake Park and Tianhe Park in Guangzhou.

If stung, wash the affected area with clean or soapy water, apply a cold compress, and avoid scratching. Seek medical attention immediately if severe symptoms or allergic reactions occur.
