Denmark marks 75 years of diplomatic relations with China in Guangzhou

On October 13, the Royal Danish Consulate General in Guangzhou, along with Chinese and Danish partners, hosted the Denmark Night Reception on Changzhou Island to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Denmark.

Seventy-five years ago, Denmark became one of the first Western countries to recognize the People’s Republic of China. Over the past seven and a half decades, the two countries have maintained a strong and growing partnership, collaborating in areas such as climate, energy, environment, food, health, maritime affairs, and education.

Changzhou Island, a well-preserved ecological site in Guangzhou’s Huangpu District, has a significant historical connection with Denmark. The first Danish ships arrived at Huangpu Port—today’s Changzhou Island—in 1731, marking the beginning of trade and maritime exchanges between the two countries.

China is Denmark's largest trading partner in Asia and its second-largest overseas investor. In 2024, bilateral trade between China and Denmark reached $15.46 billion, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 12.8 percent.

The evening reception was held in the Danish spirit of hygge. Jeppe Tranholm-Mikkelsen, Permanent Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Denmark, delivered remarks on the 75th anniversary of Denmark-China relations, while Consul General Søren Bindesbøll extended a warm welcome and reflected on the fruitful cooperation between the two countries in trade, sustainability, and culture.
