Spring plowing underway in Meizhou with tech-driven boost

Farmers across Meizhou are stepping up spring plowing and planting as the season begins, supported by increased use of agricultural technology and mechanization.

At a spring farming conference held on March 23 in Xingning County-level City, a range of "smart agriculture" applications were the highlights, including robotic dogs used for field patrols and drones working alongside rice transplanters to deliver seedlings.

In Jiaoling County, spring planting is also in full swing. At a standardized demonstration base in Changtan Town, machines are transplanting rice seedlings in neat rows, improving efficiency and ensuring stable yields. The base also provides services such as land preparation and mechanized transplanting for surrounding farmers.

Jiaoling plans to plant about 73,400 mu (around 4,900 hectares) of grain crops this spring, up slightly year on year, with sowing expected to be completed by early April.

Official data show that in 2025, Meizhou recorded a total grain planting area of 2.76 million mu (about 184,000 hectares), producing 1.15 million tonnes of grain, up 0.8 percent year on year. The average yield reached 416.7 kilograms per mu (approximately 6.25 tonnes per hectare), while progress has also been made in bringing previously idle farmland back into use.
