A burst of tart-sweet flavor will soon tantalize taste buds across Guangdong as Chaoyang District, Shantou, the "Hometown of Wusu Yangmei (Chinese bayberry)" in eastern Guangdong, launches its 2025 Yangmei Season from May 17. This annual celebration of the prized "red ruby" fruit will transform Jinzhao Town, a major production hub, into a vibrant center of agriculture, culture, and commerce.
Chaoyang Wusu Yangmei
With a 600-year cultivation history, Chaoyang's selenium-rich soil and ecological advantages nurture Yangmei, renowned for its large size, small pit, juicy flesh, and exceptional sweetness. The district's crown jewel, Xilu Wusu Yangmei, boasts national Geographical Indication status. This year, 25,000 mu (1666.67 hectares) of orchards will yield a bumper harvest from May to June, offering a two-month "ruby feast" for consumers.
Fun cultural activities under Yangmei trees
The festival's cultural offerings blend tradition with innovation. Visitors can enjoy performances featuring Chaoshan Yingge dance and embroidery alongside exhibitions celebrating Yangmei's role in local heritage. Culinary enthusiasts will delight in a Yangmei-inspired banquet crafted by master chefs, while a bustling market street will host live-streaming sales and tasting events connecting farmers directly with consumers.
Strategic collaborations will shape the industry's future. The release of the 2025-2030 Chaoyang Yangmei development plan will be accompanied by the appointment of agricultural scientists and "Yangmei cultural ambassadors" to drive technological innovation and global brand promotion. Meanwhile, rural tourism initiatives invite visitors to pick fruit directly from trees, explore "boutique Yangmei villages," and witness intangible cultural heritage crafts firsthand.
