Macao young doctors begin GBA training program in Hengqin

On March 5, the first training course of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) training program for Macao young doctors began at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University (Hengqin Hospital). A group of 10 young doctors from Macao will undertake clinical training, marking further integration of medical talent development between the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and Macao.

The hospital has designed training programs in Western medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and dentistry. Centered on clinical practice, the program allows participants to engage in outpatient services, ward rounds, case discussions, surgical observation, and simulation training for 3 to 12 months. Academic lectures and theoretical courses will also be incorporated to strengthen both clinical skills and cross-border medical practice capabilities.

The program represents an important initiative to deepen medical talent exchanges between Hengqin and Macao. The cooperation zone has established a comprehensive support system. In 2023, legislation simplified the professional registration process for Macao medical practitioners. By January 2026, the number of registered Macao medical professionals had reached 189, a 302% increase year on year.

Meanwhile, a medical training base has trained 1,153 participants in total, with Macao professionals accounting for 48%. Market access has also been further relaxed: the cooperation zone now hosts 71 medical institutions, including 14 Macao-funded or joint-venture facilities, providing more convenient healthcare services for Macao residents living in the cooperation zone.
