Mexico's Independence Day was recently celebrated with a vibrant reception in Guangzhou, the capital city of South China's Guangdong Province.
The event brought together representatives from consulates general in Guangzhou, local government, as well as Mexican institutions, enterprises, and their Chinese counterparts on September 12, celebrating the enduring friendship between China and Mexico while opening new avenues for cooperation.
Zhang Shuofu, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People's Congress, stated that exchanges between Guangdong and Mexico in trade, investment, science, and other fields have grown increasingly close and produced fruitful results. He emphasized that cooperation between the two sides demonstrates both resilience and strong potential.
According to Zhang, Guangdong-Mexico trade continued to expand in 2024, with total imports and exports reaching about 169.89 billion yuan (23.87 billion USD). The growth momentum carried into the first half of 2025, when bilateral trade hit 97.35 billion yuan (13.68 billion USD), up 19.7 percent year on year.
He also highlighted achievements such as the joint doctoral training program between Dongguan University of Technology and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the Mexico-focused session of the "Technology Go Global" event in Guangzhou.
Zhang added that Guangdong is advancing comprehensive reforms and expanding high-level opening-up while promoting the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a new stage of development. These efforts, he said, will create fresh opportunities for cooperation with countries around the world, including Mexico.
Daniel Domínguez Cantú, acting consul general of Mexico in Guangzhou, praised the long-standing ties of friendship and trade between the two countries. "The establishment in 2013 of the Mexico-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership has allowed us to strengthen and expand our commercial, economic, and political ties," he said.
Domínguez stressed that China has become a vital partner for Mexico in recent years, noting that investment promotion remains a central task of the consulate general.
In 2024, the consulate general supported more than 50 Chinese companies in establishing dialogue with both federal and state governments in Mexico and participating in investment promotion seminars and trade fairs.
According to Domínguez, Chinese foreign direct investment in Mexico reached 710 million USD in 2024.
"Mexico will continue to foster relations of friendship and cooperation with China," he added.
