Guangzhou Shipyard International wins order for two new hybrid ferries from New Zealand

Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, signed a contract on November 27 with New Zealand's Ferry Holdings to build two new hybrid roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPax) ships.

The vessels, designed for operation across the Cook Strait, will each be 200 meters long and 28 meters wide, with a capacity for 1,530 passengers. They will feature a 2.4-kilometer hybrid lane and space for 40 railway wagons. Equipped with a hybrid power system, the ships can switch between diesel and electric propulsion to enhance environmental performance.

With over two decades of experience in RoPax shipbuilding, GSI has achieved world-class standards in noise and vibration control. It holds the global record for the number of RoPax vessels built and delivered, with its ships operating in various maritime regions, including Bohai Bay, the South China Sea, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the Mediterranean, and the English Channel in Northern Europe.
