On March 6, a reception was hosted by the Consulate General of Mexico in Guangzhou to mark its 20th anniversary.
The occasion brought together Mexican and Chinese delegates, representatives from various sectors, and members of the consular corps in Guangzhou, including Mexican Ambassador to China Jesús Seade and Acting Consul General of Mexico in Guangzhou Daniel Dominguez.

Established on February 28, 2006, the Mexican consular post in Guangzhou was upgraded to a Consulate General within just two years—a testament to Mexico's recognition of Guangdong's economic dynamism. From a small representation with only one officer two decades ago, the Consulate General has steadily expanded its staff and services, reflecting the rapid growth of bilateral ties in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.

In his speech, Ambassador Seade noted that the anniversary closely followed the 54th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Mexico and China on February 14. He traced bilateral contacts back to 1565, when the Nao de China inaugurated trans-Pacific voyages between Acapulco and the Greater Bay Area—a trade route that operated for 250 years.

"Guangdong Province has always played a very special role in Mexico-China relations," Seade said, adding that following instructions from President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Consulate General is working decisively to advance cooperation with Guangdong and neighboring provinces across multiple fields.
He noted that Mexico is a critical destination for Guangdong companies, with the consulate supporting the relocation of over 100 Chinese firms in the past two years, while bilateral trade reached 170 billion yuan in 2024. Educational and cultural exchanges are also intensifying, he added, with increasing numbers of Mexican students in China and Chinese students in Mexico.

Mr. He Rusheng, Deputy Director General of the Guangdong Foreign Affairs Office, extended warm congratulations, highlighting recent high-level exchanges, with multiple Guangdong provincial leaders visiting Mexico, as well as jointly organized economic and trade promotion events that have yielded fruitful results.
A joint doctoral program between Dongguan University of Technology and Mexico's National Autonomous University now recruits globally, while China Southern Airlines has increased flights on the Shenzhen-Mexico City route to three weekly, facilitating people-to-people exchanges.

"As the host of this year's APEC meetings, Guangdong is ready to welcome distinguished guests from Mexico and other economies," He said. "We stand ready to take this anniversary as an opportunity to work with the Mexican Consulate General, further enhance our traditional practical friendship, and look ahead to another productive 20 years."
