Over several decades, Yunfu, a city in northern Guangdong, has been working to make full use of the talent in and out of the city to push forward the development of the local characteristic industries.
Technician college carries forward Yunfu's stonework art by setting up master studios
Yunfu is renowned for its stone industry since it serves as a production base for a variety of stone materials. Liang Jiankun is an inheritor of Yunfu's stonework art, one of Guangdong's intangible cultural heritages. In 2016, Liang Jiankun Skill Master Studio, the only national skill master studio in Yunfu, was established.
"We set up various special training courses to cultivate skilled technicians for the local stone industry," Liang explained. So far, the studio has cultivated more than a hundred of technicians for the stone industry.

After graduating from college this summer, Li Hanlin, one of Liang Jiankun’s student, decided to stay and work as a teaching assistant in his alma mater. Li shared his story with GDToday from learning drawing, modeling design to mastering different techniques of stonemasonry, while expressing his gratitude to his mentor Liang Jiankun for helping him become a skilled technician and win the second prize in the Yunfu Selection Competition for the 46th World Skills Competition in the architectural stonemasonry sector.
"I'll keep studying the stonemasonry techniques under the guidance of my mentor Liang Jiankun, and pass on the knowledge to the junior fellow students as much as possible," Li told GDToday.

Researchers are introduced to boost Yunfu's traditional agriculture
Located in Xinxing County, Yunfu, Wens Foodstuff Group Co., Ltd., has now built several scientific research platforms such as national engineering technology research centers and postdoctoral research workstations to conduct R&D in such fields as breeding and feeding. So far, the company has more than 300 sci-tech personnel, including 33 PhDs.

"The salary package we offer to our talent is actually nearly 20 percent higher than that in the Pearl River Delta region, and the local government also provides talent subsidies as a supplement to personal income," Chen Li, executive director of Wens Research Institute, told GDToday.

"The local government provides strong support to introduce and train high-level talent, not only financial subsidies, but also respect for talent," said Tang Qin, director of the research management department of Wens Research Institute.
Tang furthered that Yunfu would provide financial subsidies for senior professionals, and Xinxing County has also issued relevant talent introduction policies, so that the talent settling down in the city could enjoy special services in a series of aspects such as administrative approval process, medical health and their children's education.
