Guangdong introduces 300 mln USD World Bank loan for sustainable soil pollution management

Guangdong's sustainable soil pollution management project has been included in the 2024-2025 alternative project plan of the World Bank loan, marking the launch of cooperation between Guangdong and the World Bank on sustainable soil pollution management, according to the Department of Finance of Guangdong Province. The project, which plans to utilize a 300 million USD loan from the World Bank, is the largest foreign loan project in Guangdong so far.

This cooperation was proposed against the backdrop of global soil quality degradation and regional soil pollution, which pose threats to environmental health and human food security. Organized and implemented by Guangdong's Shaoguan, the project aims to promote the coordinated improvement of soil environmental quality and arable land fertility to ensure the long-term sustainability of food security production and the sustainable use of soil resources.

Based in Shaoguan, a city located in a subtropical red earth region and an important national ecological functional area, the project makes full use of the advantages of the World Bank in global public goods, such as promoting the mitigation of climate change and knowledge sharing. It is committed to building a sustainable soil pollution management system by demonstrating advanced soil pollution management mechanisms and technologies, to accumulate experience, and provide a path for sustainable soil pollution management for other regions of China as well as tropical and subtropical regions in Southeast Asia and South America.
