Thailand and Guangdong seal new health tech pacts, pushing for synergy

On July 1, marking the golden 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the "Thailand-China Advanced Therapy and Healthcare Technology Cooperation Seminar and Cooperation Signing" convened in Guangzhou, South China.

Organized by the Royal Thai Consulate General in Guangzhou, the high-level symposium assembled a 62-member Thai delegation comprising government officials, representatives from six medical universities, four hospitals, and private sector entities, reaffirming bilateral commitments to public health security and medical technology innovation established in the February 2025 Joint Statement issued during the Thai Prime Minister's visit to China.

Delegates deliberated on three frontier fields: gene editing therapy, bio-manufacturing platform technology, and AI applications in medical laboratories, resulting in the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between the two sides.

Reforgene Co., Ltd., which signed the MOUs, is leading a gene editing therapy project targeting thalassemia, a major public health challenge in Thailand and ASEAN, aiming to bring cures to patients and usher Thailand into the gene therapy era.

According to Mr. Kajtiti Wiwatwanont, Consul-General of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Guangzhou, the seminar also focused on "unlocking medical tourism opportunities" and strengthening supply chains and investments.

The signing of these three MOUs is a highlight, as they advance bilateral connectivity while streamlining healthcare supply chains—particularly upstream segments—and generate strategic investment opportunities for Thailand in financial capital and healthcare talent development, he added.
