China secures strong start at Jakarta World Gymnastics Championships

Throughout Monday's men's qualification, China secured multiple berths in the finals. Zou qualified for the parallel bars final, Zhang Boheng advanced to both the all-around and rings finals, Shi Cong earned spots in the all-around, parallel bars and horizontal bar finals, Huang Mingqi reached the vault final, and Hong Yanming advanced to the pommel horse final.

Zou, who previously claimed the parallel bars and team titles and a pommel horse silver medal at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, returned to the same city with confidence. His 6.0-difficulty routine, executed with exceptional precision and a 0.1 bonus for a solid landing, brought the crowd to its feet and set a new benchmark for this year's championships.

Zhang performed smoothly on the rings, vault and parallel bars but suffered a costly slip on the horizontal bar, which pushed him out of the top 60 in that event. However, with stable routines on the floor and pommel horse, he joined Shi in the all-around final.

Huang, the only Chinese gymnast contesting the vault final, produced an almost flawless first vault, scoring 14.833 points including a 0.1 landing bonus, before a minor error on the second vault left him sixth overall, still enough to reach the final.

"My condition in Jakarta has been good," said Huang. "My goal today was to qualify for the final rather than go all-out with my highest difficulty, but I didn't expect the first vault to go that well, maybe I was too excited."

Huang later withdrew from the horizontal bar event as a precaution after a minor landing adjustment on his second vault.

For newcomer Hong, the 19-year-old impressed on the pommel horse with elegant form and composure, scoring 14.600 points to rank second in qualification and secure a spot in the final.
